It’s all in the timing at Sky Plaza in Leeds

Some projects are more straightforward than others. The replacement of the rainscreen facade on the Sky Plaza tower block in Leeds appeared to be one of those jobs.

Our task was to replace the ACM panels on the building in response to fire safety checks carried out by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The existing rail system was in good working order making the replacement of the facade a relatively simple task. With fire safety a big driver of the project, the challenge came in getting the work completed in time for the new academic year in September. During term time, Sky Plaza provides accommodation for 533 students from the nearby Leeds Becket University and the University of Leeds. Even over the quieter summer months, the 103-metre-tall tower was often up to 70% occupied.

We developed the design for the replacement panels working together with our own engineer, the client’s architect and facade consultant. We removed and replaced the rainscreen façade on the tower block. Most importantly, we were able to complete the project in time for the return of students in September.
